May Day
May Day, or International Workers' Day, is celebrated around
the world on May 1. This is a special day to remember the historical struggles
and sacrifices of working people. It is a public holiday in almost every
country around the world. The historic events of that day are related to the
tragic events in the American city of Chicago. On May 1, 1886, half the workers
of the McCormick Harvester Company in Chicago went on strike to demand an
eight-hour workday. Two days later, there was a labor rally near McCormick
Harvester, and many workers joined. Suddenly, about 200 policemen attacked them
with clubs and pistols. One striker died instantly. Another five or six people
were seriously injured. The spirit of the day is to provide better working
conditions and better wages to working people.
